Choosing your mattress and tension
Every mattress in our king size range is built on pocket springs for support. The fillings around them shape how the mattress feels, and natural fillings such as wool also help regulate your temperature.
Your sleeping position guides the tension. Side sleepers need a softer tension to cushion the shoulder and hip, and front sleepers a firmer one to stop the hips dropping. Most back sleepers suit a medium tension. Our Product Technologist, Louise Silver, notes that no two brands describe firmness the same way, so we recommend trying a mattress in one of our showrooms.
Brands in our king size range
Our king size mattresses come from four British makers and our own collection. Vispring handcraft theirs in Devon, nesting each spring in its own cotton calico pocket. Hypnos, Royal Warrant holders, handcraft our Hypnos Organics mattresses in Buckinghamshire, each certified organic by the Soil Association. In Yorkshire, Harrison Spinks handcraft mattresses exclusive to Feather & Black, and they also make our Flaxby Platinum collection. Sleepeezee, also Royal Warrant holders, handcraft theirs in Kent. Our own Feather & Black mattresses are made in the UK.
King size vs super king
Both sizes are 200cm long, so the difference is width. A king is 150cm wide, 15cm wider than a double. A super king is 180cm wide, giving each sleeper the width of a single bed, with room for children or pets to join you in the morning.
King size mattresses are 5 foot wide and 6 foot 6 inches long, which is the same as W150cm x L200cm. A king mattress is 3 inches longer than a double mattress, so if you’re over 6ft tall the extra length will ensure you have a good amount of space to sleep comfortably.

It depends on the mattress. Across our king size range, spring counts run from around 800 to over 21,000. Most product pages show the count, so you can compare mattresses before you choose.
Yes. Queen is another name for a small double, which measures 120cm by 190cm. A king measures 150cm by 200cm, so it is 30cm wider and 10cm longer.
There are two mattress sizes that are bigger than a king size mattress, super king and emperor, both of which are available at Feather & Black. Both offer a superior sleeping space, with a super king mattress measuring 6 foot by 6 foot 6 inches, or 180cm x 200cm, and an emperor mattress measuring 6 foot 6 inches by 6 foot 6 inches, or 200cm x 200cm.
Our king size range covers soft, medium, firm and very firm tensions, and you can filter this page by tension. If you share your bed with someone who prefers a different feel, several mattresses in the range come in a split tension version, with a different tension on each side. Yes. Our 100 Night Comfort Guarantee lets you sleep on your new mattress for up to 100 nights. If it is not right for you, we will exchange it for another mattress. You can ask for an exchange from 30 nights, because it can take that long for your body to adjust. Each exchange carries a collection and re-delivery charge. Some mattresses are not covered, including made-to-measure and ex-display, and our comfort guarantee page sets out the full terms.
Yes. We offer free room of choice delivery on all orders to mainland England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Wight. If your mattress is in stock, you can choose your delivery date at checkout.
Yes. Our recycling service collects your old mattress when we deliver your new one. The cost depends on the size of the mattress.
