Ottoman beds
An ottoman bed gives you storage beneath the mattress, with room for spare bedding, pillows and out-of-season clothes. Choose the side-opening Orla in soft linen-look upholstery, the electric Charlotte that opens at the touch of a button, or a front-opening Harrison Spinks base handcrafted in the UK. Choose from double, king size and super king, and pair your bed with one of our mattresses. Explore the collection below.
Why choose an ottoman bed?
An ottoman bed gives you storage without adding another piece of furniture. The mattress platform lifts to reveal the space beneath, so you can keep what you do not use every day out of sight. If you are deciding between lift-up storage and a standard divan, read our guide to the difference between ottoman and divan beds.
How do our ottoman beds open?
The Orla lifts from the side, the Charlotte opens electrically, and the Harrison Spinks bases lift from the front.
The side-opening Orla
The Orla Side Opening Ottoman Bed lifts from the side. Its frame is upholstered in a soft linen-look fabric, with a traditional valance skirt and a plump headboard finished with French seams.
The electric Charlotte
The Charlotte Electric Ottoman Bed opens at the touch of a button, on the left or the right side. The bed opens at a steady pace and stops the moment you release the button, and a light inside shows you what you keep there. A high winged headboard and a matching footboard frame the bed.
Front-opening Harrison Spinks bases
The Harrison Spinks Classic and Premium Ottoman Divan Bases open from the front, with air-pressured pistons that lift the bed top to reveal edge-to-edge storage. Harrison Spinks assembles and upholsters each base at its factory in Leeds, and both bases carry a 7 year guarantee.
Should you choose a side-opening or front-opening bed?
Choose by where you have space. The Orla and the Charlotte open from the side, so they suit rooms with clear space along one side of the bed, including rooms where the foot of the bed sits close to a wall. The Harrison Spinks bases open from the front, so they suit rooms with space at the foot of the bed, or beds set between two bedside tables.
Which size ottoman bed do you need?
A double takes a 135cm by 190cm mattress. A king size takes 150cm by 200cm, and a super king takes 180cm by 200cm. The Orla and the Harrison Spinks bases come in all three sizes. The Charlotte comes in king size or super king. Our mattress size guide sets out the measurements for each UK size.
How much room does an ottoman bed need?
Measure the room against the overall size of the bed, not the mattress. In double, the Orla measures 147cm wide by 218cm long. In king size, the Orla measures 162cm by 226cm and the Charlotte 173cm by 226cm. In super king, the Orla measures 192cm by 226cm and the Charlotte 203cm by 226cm. The Harrison Spinks bases match the mattress size, so a double base measures 135cm by 190cm. If your room is tight, read our guide to space-saving beds for small bedrooms.
Allow extra space on the side the bed opens. Our bed buying guide shows you how to mark out the space and check that the bed will pass through doorways and up the stairs.
How much storage do you get?
The storage fills the space beneath the mattress, with room for spare duvets, linen and anything else you use less often. The Orla gives you 21.5cm of storage depth. The Harrison Spinks bases give edge-to-edge storage in two halves. Keep the bedding you use each week nearest the opening and out-of-season clothes further in. If you choose the Orla, you can add the Orla Ottoman Box for more hidden storage.
Can you put any mattress on an ottoman bed?
You can, as long as the mattress matches the size of the bed and its weight falls within the range the bed recommends. Each product page lists a lower and an upper mattress weight, so check both before you choose.
In double, the Harrison Spinks bases take a mattress of 37kg to 54kg, and the Orla 20kg to 70kg. In king size, the Harrison Spinks bases take 44kg to 64kg, the Orla 20kg to 70kg, and the Charlotte 10kg to 80kg. In super king, the Harrison Spinks bases take 53kg to 77kg, the Orla 20kg to 85kg, and the Charlotte 15kg to 100kg.
Can you add a headboard?
The Orla and the Charlotte each come with their own headboard. The Harrison Spinks bases come without one, and each product page suggests a headboard to go with the base. Browse our headboards to find one that suits the room.
Which fabrics and colours can you choose?
Each of our ottoman beds is upholstered, with a choice of fabric or colour, and we will send you free samples before you decide. The Orla comes in a soft linen-look fabric in Natural or Olive. The Charlotte comes in natural bouclé or blue velvet.
The Harrison Spinks Premium base comes in four fabrics, Diamond Onyx, Herringbone Cotton, Hemp Oat and Hemp Arable. The Diamond and Herringbone wool fabrics come from Moon, based in Yorkshire since 1837. The Hemp fabrics, a blend of 60% pure new wool and 40% hemp, come from Camira in Huddersfield. The Classic base also comes in four fabrics, including Greek Islands Chalk and Seven Navy.
Do ottoman beds come flat packed?
They arrive in separate packages for assembly. A Harrison Spinks base comes in two packages, the Orla in four and the Charlotte in six. You can add our assembly service when you order, and every bed comes with assembly instructions if you would rather build it yourself.
How does delivery work?
Delivery to your room of choice is free on all orders going to mainland England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Wight. For beds that are in stock, you can choose your preferred delivery date at checkout. The Harrison Spinks bases are made to order, and in most cases you can still choose a delivery date for them at checkout.
How do you look after an upholstered ottoman bed?
Have the upholstery cleaned professionally. If you spot clean a mark, take care, because spot cleaning can leave a mark of its own. When you need to move the bed, lift it rather than drag it across the floor. The Harrison Spinks bases are made with FSC-accredited wood and recycled materials, and at the end of their life, they are 100% recyclable. Our mattress care guide has more on looking after your mattress.
