Mattress Care Guide

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR MATTRESS

Mattress care is important and there are a few simple things you can do to prolong the life of your mattress and keep it in tip-top condition.

Here’s how to take care of your mattress.

When you first get your mattress

Remove your mattress from its packaging and leave it to air, uncovered, in a well-ventilated room for a few hours. Remember that a new mattress will take time to get used to, so allow time for your body to adjust.

Allow your fillings to settle

A new mattress always needs a little time for the fillings to settle and particular parts of the mattress may settle more quickly than others, but this isn’t cause for concern, it’s just the mattress doing what it’s meant to and responding to the areas of support that your body needs. Natural mattresses will have a natural smell to them and this is expected. It may take a week or so to dissipate.

Use a mattress protector

A mattress protector will help keep your mattress clean by adding a protective layer, it can be washed regularly, whilst also adding extra comfort. The protector also reduces the amount of body moisture that comes into contact with the mattress, keeping it more hygienic.

Turn your mattress

As a general rule, we suggest you turn your mattress every few months to help resettle the fillings. This will help even out the pressure on the mattress and avoid irregular wear.

  • However, please check your mattress turning instructions, as some, such as the pillow tops, do not need turning.
  • Our Harrison Spinks mattresses non-turn mattresses can be identified by the non-sleeping surface sticker on the underside.
  • We also have seasonal turn mattresses which have a cool and a warm side and offer temperature control based on their fillings.
  • Unzip zip & link mattresses to turn and rotate them both together.
  • A mattress with dual firmness should be turned from head to foot only to maintain your normal sleeping side and preferred tension.

Rotate your mattress

Ideally you should rotate your mattress 180 degrees regularly during the first three months, and then two to three times a year thereafter. This helps to reduce body impressions.

For non-turn zip & link mattresses we recommend you unzip your mattresses and rotate each one 180 degrees, without turning them over.

Brush your mattress

It’s a good idea to lightly brush your mattress once a month to help keep it clean.

We recommend dust and fluff be removed from Harrison Spinks mattresses using a soft brush only as a vacuum cleaner can displace the natural fillings. Spillages should be absorbed using a dry cloth or paper towel, and if you need to sponge the mattress, use a damp cloth and a very mild solution of soap and water.
