Have a cosy Christmas

Invest in a few bedroom pieces to create a cosy and inviting habitat where you can relax on those cold winter nights Go soft. Feelings of ‘cosiness’ often involve soft materials. Invest in all things soft. This could include a luxurious upholstered bedstead; our new Genevieve is upholstered in sumptuous moleskin, which is perfect for an early night leaning against with a good book. Historically wingback chairs were designed to prevent drafts in old houses from reaching the upper body, our new wingback style bed is the perfect place to hibernate on those cold winter nights! What's in a name: Brighton

Our colourful new kid’s bed takes its inspiration from this iconic seaside town. Most people just change the sheets; with this bed you can change its upholstery! The covers are detachable and washable; they can even be swapped for an alternate colour scheme if you wish. Our Brighton bed is available in a triad of colours and can be switched from red to blue to natural. When naming the bed Brighton immediately sprung to mind. Its gloriously multicoloured laneways and beach huts make Brighton one of the most vibrant places to visit. Now who’s for some rock?

Bean Bag Crazy

Well what a lovely surprise all this hot weather has been! Drifting up through our office window the waft of BBQs and the passing tinkling of an ice-cream van melody is cruelly tantalizing, but signal English summertime. Just in time we have introduced these delicious beanbags into our stores. They would be wonderful for the playroom and sublime for the garden, they are very hardwearing and even shower proof as long as it’s not torrential! Kids will love them and I’m sure the yellow urban lounger will be suitable for larger derrières too!

Women need more sleep: It's Official

According to research conducted by the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, women need more sleep than men. Apparently women work their brains harder in the day resulting in them requiring around 20 minutes more sleep a night than men. Women tend to really work the part of their brain called the ‘Cerebral Cortex’ which is responsible for intelligence, language, memory and consciousness, it seems that it is all down to women being able to multi task and spend their day constantly switching from one task to the other! Deep sleep is the key to helping the Cerebral Cortex recover...

National Bed Month is upon us

This month is The Sleep Council’s ‘National Bed Month’ running from 1st -31st March, so we thought we would take a look at how beds have been represented in the media through the years with some examples you may recognize and some you will not! There have been some rather interesting designs out there! As some of you may remember in 1969 John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged a ‘Bed-In’ this was a peace protest against the Vietnam War, one ‘Bed-In’ was held in Amsterdam and the other in Montreal each lasting 7 days each. Just imagine staying in bed...

Spring has arrived

Spring is nearly here, bringing with it better weather (we hope!), fresh blooms, luscious grass, budding trees, new life and a sense of a fresh start. Now is the perfect time to begin freshening up your home, including your bedroom. Most people use this time of year to completely spring clean their life from top to bottom, de-cluttering and re-organising their homes. Once you have thrown out the pile of old magazines, cleared your wardrobe and given the clothes that no longer fit/you have never worn to the charity shop and filed away that mountain of paperwork why not take...

A brief history of pillows

At Feather & Black bedroom furniture we’re rather fond of a good quality pillow. Rewind several thousand years and so were the Ancient Egyptians who furnished their tombs in animated pillows; often mirroring the striking images on the walls around them. Even during this period, pillows were synonymous with wealth and decadence and quite literally the more pillows you had the better off you were! As patterns and dyes became more intricate, pillows developed as an art form, with China, Persia and Medieval Europe regarding them as valuable commodities. In the early 16th Century, Tudor England embraced pillows and they...

I'm A Starfish

No wait, I’m a soldier! I have not gone crazy before you ask – I am simply trying to work out what type of personality I have! Here at Feather & Black we feel it is important to know what type of person our customers are. Are you a Yearner, a Foetus or a Free faller? These are some of the positions in which people sleep which say a lot about a person. Have you always slept in the same position and have done for years? Research found that most people are unlikely to change their sleeping position through the...

Introducing the Hemingway mattress, one of the newest additions to our mattress story, and what a mighty fine addition it is. A brief history of memory foam

At Feather & Black we always try to imagine what bedtime was like before memory foam was invented. The introduction of memory foam to the modern world has done what the iPod did to music; making sleep far more enjoyable and adaptive to your requirements. Memory foam is now one of the most popular materials used in mattress production around the world, with the majority of manufacturers and designers incorporating it to deal with high demand. It was only in 1999 that memory foam was widely available to the retail sector, however in the early 1970s NASA were using it...

Traditional v Modern bedroom styles

So you’re ready to start designing the bedroom of your dreams but what’s your style? Do you prefer something classic that won’t date easily or are you more of a modernist? Follow our tips to ensure a masterpiece bedroom, whatever your taste. A traditional bedroom creates a homey often understated environment. Period homes with tall ceilings, architraves and generous skirting boards lend themselves perfectly to larger pieces of furniture. A small bed will be lost in such grand surroundings. Choose pieces with curved form like a sleigh or cabriole leg style bed. Use layers of opulent curtains that drape to...
